The Corps of Discovery spent six sunny days and one hundred and twelve cold, sick, rained-on days wintering near the mouth of the Columbia River before journeying back to St. Louis with the news of their discoveries. The Clatsop Indians helped them build a fort on their land a complex of buildings that Oregonian weather subsequently rotted in less than fifty years.
