Outer Hebrides

On the wind-blasted Western Isles of Scotland, the Outer Hebrides, the brief November sun is never overhead. Its metallic light streaks across the horizon at an oblique angle as if it were perpetually four in the afternoon. On the eastern horizon sunrise lingers for two hours and to the west the moon is a still, pale circle in the sky. Within twenty minutes pounding rainstorms give way to a succession of rainbows.
