Seeking the Open Heart

Colophon

Ten acrylic and pastel paintings on paper were created in response to a set of poems by Michael Hannon entitled Seeking the Open Heart. The paintings were directly scanned and used in effect as the plate from which the limited edition of prints was made for this 9" x 9" book. The images were printed on Somerset Radiant White paper using Pinnacle Gold archival inks at Duganne Atelier, Santa Monica, California. The text was printed letterpress from photopolymer plates, typeset in Baskerville MT. It was printed and handbound at The Lumino Press, Santa Barbara, California. The paste-papers for the cover were created by Mary Heebner, with many thanks to John Balkwill for this idea and other design assistance. Thanks to Michael Hannon for sharing his poems. The edition is limited to seventy-five copies plus five hors commerce copies and is signed by both Michael Hannon and Mary Heebner.

Dedication

On their way to emptiness and silence, these poems are fortunate to have found the company of Mary Heebner's images,
in which the inexpressible can be understood as music.
This version of things is for Mary's dad.
-Michael Hannon

Only after listening over and again for the rhythm in Michael's poetry could I begin to make these paintings.
As a reed man, who had also recorded countless musicians, my dad, Walt Heebner, used to tell me this: — to find the rhythm, you have to listen to the spaces in between the notes. These paintings are in memory of him.
- Mary Heebner
